Will my site be okay on shared web hosting, or should I go for dedicated hosting?

I’m going to be starting a speculative fiction web magazine, but I’m unsure whether to use a shared hosting service or a dedicated host.

Chosen Answer:

Dedicated hosting will cost you for a month what shared hosting would cost for an year. Well, of course that is not the way to decide which one to go for.

Usually many people start with shared hosting (even forums and small social networking sites).. and when they find that they have lots of visitors and hence bandwidth requirement, that’s when they move over to semi-dedicated (most people don’t know of this option) or dedicated hosting. It gives you the time to grow your site to the point where the fee you pay for dedicated hosting is really worth it. Usually it might take you anywhere from 8-12 months in doing so unless of course you are already a well known person and the launch of the website you are talking about is anticipated by lots of folks, in which case you’ll have a flood as soon as you start your website.

Just start with cheap, shared hosting until your site outgrows shared hosting. If you get that big, you should have some revenue, and then you could afford a dedicated or co-lo server.

I think for beginning you can start with a shared web hosting.
You can find a list of one of the best shared hosting company over here:

I am using shared web hosting for my website and I haven’t got any problems so far.
Later on when your website will have a lot of user you can move it to a dedicated host. But for beginning shared hosting is good and it is cheap.

Shared hosting. Among other things, Dedicated hosting is really only needed for the following: REAL unlimited file size, mysql databases, e-mail accounts, number of files, and if you want to sell hosting space to other people as a reseller.

Be aware that in shared, generally you get to be able to host only one site, and if any of the other “owners” use the server as a spam emailer, than browsers may block your emails too (blocking is generally done by IP address – that is the machine address, rather than by sending web site). Another issue is that another of the other sites could cause the server to crash, or to hog all the memory/CPU/HDD thereby causing your site to be non-responsive.

So start with shared as has been suggested by others, then if you have issues try to find someone you trust with a dedicated that you can rent space off, or go the whole hog and get one yourself.

I always tell my clients to start out with shared hosting for a new startup. When you outgrow it, your hosting company should be able to upgrade you to VPS or dedicated pretty easily.

On top of shared hosting being much less inexpensive than dedicated hosting, you have less responsibility using shared. The hosting company will take care of things like server reboots, security issues and upgrades. With dedicated hosting, you are are more responsible for these types of system administration tasks.
